The Study

In May 2000, Alexa Research was commissioned by Danni’s Hard Drive to study the most popular sites in the Alexa Rankings and determine the most trafficked websites run by and featuring a woman.

Web analysts at Alexa looked at each of the top 1100 sites in the May 2000 rankings. Alexa Research, in conjunction with Danni’s Hard Drive, developed classification of a "Top Web Sites Run by and Featuring a Woman”, the following criteria were applied to each site to determine eligibility:

1. Real, Live Woman: There must be a real woman behind the site who is currently alive (Victoria's Secret would not count).

2. Biography: There must be a bio of the woman on the site (evidenced by items such as where the woman grew up, how she got where she is today, and other historical and biographical information).

3. Solo: The site must have only one woman around who the site continually features, evidenced by the name of the site or domain, or by a picture of or quote by the woman on most pages.

4. "Official" Site: The site must be owned, operated, or managed by the woman to whom it is devoted, or owned, operated, or managed by one of her designees (fan sites would not count).

5. English only: The site must be in English.

These criteria would include sites such as Martha Stewart's, Oprah’s, Danni's, and Cindy Margolis', but exclude sites like Victoria's Secret and Karasxxx.com.

Analysts studying the sites were instructed to be as impartial as possible, following only the criteria listed above. Each site in the top 1100 was examined by two analysts to ensure consistency in applying criteria.

The Results

Although numerous sites feature women as part of their content, the results show that fewer sites are focused on the personality and presence of a singular woman. In fact, only three sites in the top 1100 met all the criteria above. The top ranked site run by and featuring a woman was danni.com.

The three sites run by and featuring a woman are listed below, along with their ranks:

Sites May Rank
1 Danni.com 602
2 Marthastewart.com 880
3 Oprah.com 1094

This study was performed only on May’s data. Results may differ over a different period.
